Tanner Rose is a fourteen year old movie and television star. She enjoys her fame and is deep into the Hollywood party scene. When her behavior gets out of control her mother sends her to stay at the country home of her college friend, Miss Ruth. The plan is for Tanner to rest and regroup so that she will be able to focus when filming for her new upcoming show.

Unfortunately for Tanner her problem is not that she is too stressed – the child is addicted to drinking and smoking and when she is out partying there are drugs and boys who have impure intentions. Her self esteem rests in her fame so she does not appreciate being dropped off in the middle of nowhere and especially not at the home of a boy that is not impressed by her status. She doesn’t know what to make of Miss Ruth’s son, Gabriel.

Gabriel is sixteen and he is a very devout Catholic. He and his friends are all clean cut and fairly innocent. Gabriel is also extremely handsome and in good physical condition. Each day he practices martial arts and is quite accomplished.

As most people who are mired in addiction or other bad behaviors do, Tanner tries to corrupt Gabriel and his friends. Every time that they go out Tanner does something infuriating or embarrassing. Gabriel tries not to let her get under his skin but because of his own issues, she does. Amazingly, he is able to tell her in plain language why her behavior is unacceptable and talk in clear language about how God’s love is better than fame or parties or any of the things Tanner holds dear and confuses for happiness.

The story takes some twists and some turns as we learn more about both of the teens and their issues. It comes to a point where either Gabriel’s faith will attract Tanner and allow her to let her true self shine through or Tanner’s life will tempt Gabriel to do things he never even considered. Freeing Tanner Rose: Chapter 1

THE music pounded within the constraints of the dimmed room, pulsating through the bodies of every dancing person. It was a large, extravagant room, packed far beyond capacity and marred by the quality of entertainment. The crowd created a thick, stuffy heat in the space, along with a stench that was a culmination of cologne, perfume, and sweat. But to the guests attending, it was a paradise. It was a place of refuge for some, and a place to hide for others. And you had to be someone special to be invited.

Tanner threw her head back and laughed, spilling her cocktail and squealing. She was sitting on her friend Emma’s lap, experiencing the perfect level of euphoria, and she didn’t want the feeling to end. As she looked around the room, she was suddenly aware of the fact that her life would probably never get any better than this. The thought seemed ridiculous, since she was only fourteen. But the idea that she could feel even happier than she felt at that exact moment, seemed even more inconceivable. She let out a content breath and scrambled awkwardly to her feet.

“I want to dance!” She yelled her announcement over the music and turned to Emma. She reached out to her friend, who let out a short scream.

“Watch your smoke!” Tanner had forgotten that she was smoking.

“Oh, my bad,” she said and giggled. She dropped the cigarette butt into an unfinished beer bottle and attempted to pull her reluctant friend off the couch. A hand grabbed her arm and spun her around, and almost off balance. She was suddenly face to face with Jason Allen. His brown eyes sparkled.

Tanner Rose, I’ve been looking for you.”

“I’ve been here,” she said, laughing and gesturing to her surroundings. He spun her again and the move caused her vision to swirl. She let out a screech and grabbed him for support. “Cut that out!”

“You look amazing,” he said, taking advantage of her backless dress and caressing her bare skin. “I was looking for a dance, but now I’m thinking we should take a little time alone.”

“Are you undressing me with your eyes, Mr. Allen?”

“Kind of,” he said and laughed, “but you haven’t made it too hard, if you know what I mean.”

“Whatever!” She laughed too.

“So, what about it?” he asked with a wink. “Wanna make out?”

“I want to dance!” she said sternly and grabbed his hand. She dragged him through the mob of people.

Tanner pushed her way in among the mass of bodies on the dance floor and closed her eyes. And then she lost herself. She lost herself in the music, the movement of the crowd, and the warm and fuzzy sensation that was consuming her. That was the last thing she remembered.

As you can see, I’m still making changes. I’m confident that the majority of authors share that same reluctance to let a novel go. I could definitely continue to edit as long as I’m given the opportunity. But it’s time to let go!

How difficult is it for you to let go of a novel?

Letting Go of a Novel After Years of Laughs and Tears!

Freeing Tanner Rose final draft

With the conclusion of “Freeing Tanner Rose” impending, I’m feeling a tad depressed, and somewhat fearful! Don’t get me wrong…there’s definitely some joy included in the vat of mixed emotions.

This has become the norm as the end of one book is replaced with the beginning of another! At least, it’s also what happened when I finished “The Destiny of Sunshine Ranch.”

I started typing up “Freeing Tanner Rose” in 2009. I’m not sure when I began scribbling in my notebook. I usually begin my novels this way. My point? It took approximately five years to write this novel. And now I have to let it go. This is it. Once it’s published, it’s done!

So, I’m a little sad because I have to let it go, and I’m afraid for the same reason. At this point I’ve drained all possibility of anything else occurring that would benefit this story further. But what if something comes to mind when it’s published?

I’ve loved, hated, laughed, and cried through the process. The only thing left to do is pray. I pray that I wrote the best story that I could write, and that I glorified my Maker in doing so.

Creating “Freeing Tanner Rose” is over. But getting to know the novel is not. It’s just the beginning for my readers.

Now, I just need to decide which of my back-burner novels to work on next!

Revising the Novel “Freeing Tanner Rose”: A Love-Hate Process

Saving Tanner Rose-cover sneak peek
Ahhhhh…revising is the most frustrating, exhilarating,  tedious, exciting process, is it not? It’s an oxymoronic experience, for sure!

I’m right at the end of revising Freeing Tanner Rose, but there’s still a few more full revisions to do. The story is complete and I have a reader on it. I only have a moment to breathe, and then I’ll get a list of questions that came up during the read. I’ll fix those. Then I’ll reread the whole thing to elaborate, add, and adjust where necessary. Then I’ll do another full read for a final edit. This is why writers get sick of their own stories, while still in awe of their own accomplishment.

During the revision process, I’ll love and I’ll hate what I wrote. And then when it’s done, I’ll have to let it go. And that’s a whole other emotional phase in the writing process.

While the end is close, it feels so far away! I hope to preview the first chapter soon.

Thanks for checking in.

Best and blessings to you all, TMG

“Freeing Tanner Rose” Update: Jumping into Chapter One When Writing Fiction Novels

ID-10029218

I’m reluctant to get into editing the “final” draft of Freeing Tanner Rose. Why? In contemplating it’s conclusion, I’ve realized that I have to introduce a new beginning. This may seem like a drastic change at such a late stage -and maybe there would have been a time when such a decision was unnerving, but it won’t be the first time.

When finalizing The Destiny of Sunshine Ranch I did the same thing. What was supposed to be the first chapter of that novel is now four pages into chapter 4. And I feel the story has been strengthened because of it.

If the idea of moving chapters around, changing the introduction or even changing the ending of the whole novel enters your mind, don’t brush it away. It’s tempting, I know, but the notion exists for a reason. Your reader has to jump into chapter one and not want to leave your story until it’s absolutely necessary. I’m not sure the first chapter of Freeing Tanner Rose achieves this.

If you decide to make a drastic change to your fiction novel at the last stage, remember to make sure that the change is reflected wherever necessary throughout the novel. To ensure this is the case, you’ll have to get a pair of fresh eyes to read the whole novel for you.

Sure, the change will likely knock you off schedule, but if your desire is to put out quality fiction, the wait will be worth it!

Good luck, God bless and wish me the same!

Ugh! Time to get to it.

Where’s “Tanner Rose”?

Saving Tanner Rose-cover sneak peek

Yes! I promised that my next book, Freeing Tanner Rose would be published by the end of 2012. Well, it’s 2013 and it’s still not published! Why? Some of you may be wondering. Well, life and work have gotten in the way.

I do pray that some day my fiction will be my number one source of income, but until then, there’s freelance writing and blogging. One particular project that I’m blessed to be a part of is Project Inspired. It’s a Christian website for teen girls. You should check it out!

I’ve also been compelled to begin another novel. I have a tendency to write more than one at a time when fresh ideas excite and inspire!

Besides my work, I home-school the oldest of my 3 children, take care of the other two young ones (actually 3, since I have another one on the way). My husband and I are also welcoming 15 chicks and 2 doe-ling goats within the next few months, in an attempt to begin a mini-farm. We grow a large garden in the summer and are planning on canning. Our hope is to create a self-sufficient lifestyle, and in doing so, Tanner Rose has been placed on the side-lines.

It’s not that her story is not important. It really is. It’s worth telling and worth reading. And I plan on getting the novel completed soon. But I wanted to share the reasons why she’s been neglected.

Honestly, the separation has been a good one. While my life is hectic, all my other “to dos” have allowed me to step away so that I can have a fresh approach when I get back into it to complete the final draft.

I’ve not spent time with Tanner Rose, nor Gabriel for that matter, for a while, but neither have left my mind. I think of them daily, confirming the completion of their story and some of the details in between. I look forward to getting together with them soon.

Thank you for letting me share and God bless you all!

Do Boys Like Gabriel and Faden Really Exist?

Guys on purity
You haven’t met Gabriel yet. But he’s a teen boy with gorgeous blue eyes, dark hair and a handsome face. He could be a model if he wanted to. And he could probably have any girl that he wanted to also. But his desire is to lead a pure life, dedicated to following Christ. Gabriel is from my upcoming novel, Freeing Tanner Rose.

Faden is another character with similar aspirations. He’s from my novel, The Destiny of Sunshine Ranch.

But do boys like Gabriel and Faden really exist? Are there boys out there who strive for purity, modesty and other strong Christian values, or are my novels just fairy-tales?

So tell me. Do you know boys like Gabriel and Faden? Why do you believe that these boys are few and far between?
